Educational Maintenance & Operations

Replacement Levy Election

February 3rd, 2004

Replacement Levy will not increase tax rates

Measure continues funding for current staff and school programs

Renton School District citizens will vote on a four-year Education Maintenance and Operations (M&O) replacement levy on the February 3, 2004 ballot. The levy will renew the districts current levy, which expires in 2004 and requires voter approval to continue. Funding from the M&O replacement levy represents about 24 percent of the districts annual budget. This levy is not a new tax; it will not increase tax rates since it is a continuation of the current levy.

School districts are funded from three sources: federal, state and local (levy) funding. Federal funding makes up about 10 percent of the Renton School District budget; state funding makes up about 66 percent; and local levy funding makes up about 24 percent of the annual budget. Local levy funds must have voter approval to continue.

The four-year levy promotes improved long-term fiscal planning. Additionally, a four-year levy will save taxpayer dollars, since the district will fund only one election in the four-year cycle instead of two.
